Model-based System Integration: A tutorial about designing
human-embedded systems
Avi is the developer of the modern methodologies for utility-oriented systems engineering, integration engineering, and HSI engineering. The focus is on preventing operational errors. Avi proposes tutorials for developers of safety-critical, mission-critical, productivity-critical and consumer products, with examples from these domains. Most accidents involving unexpected system behavior are commonly attributed to errors. In analysis of case studies of well documented accidents it was found that in many of them the root causes were integration mistakes. It turns out that errors are also a key source of productivity loss in operating office systems, and of failure to operate communication and home applications. Review of the integration literature reveals a need to develop guidelines for integration design and testing. This tutorial presents an affordable methodology developed in the last two decades, which offers principles and methods for employing behavioral twins in model-based integration design and testing. The new methodology integrates methodologies of interaction engineering, human-system integration (HSI) engineering, human-centered design (HCD) and safety engineering. The ultimate goal is to develop failure-free systems. Root-cause analysis (RCA) of several case studies indicates a key source for failure, which is under-disciplined coordination between interacting processes. The new methodology promotes reliable coordination. It integrates methods commonly employed in leading industries with generic/universal interaction rules, based on scenario-based modeling.
